Author interview with Andrei-Ion Ghircoias
By dragonqueen3 on March 16, 2025
Dragon Soul Press had the chance to interview Andrei-Ion Ghircoias, an author featured in The Hunt anthology.
Oh, the dreaded “introduce yourself” part! Reminds me of how teachers would put you in front of the classroom and ask you to present something. Thank God I have some experience in that area.
Well, where to begin? I am Andrei, and since I was little I’ve had a penchant for writing. It was something I was doing mostly as a hobby, to pass the time between video games, video games, and, of course, video games. But since a few years ago, I decided to commit wholeheartedly to it and accept that this is not just a hobby. This is my passion.
What prompted you to begin writing?
When I was a kid, I was reading a book and reached a chapter that I didn’t like at all.
One of my favorite characters died in it. So, I decided to rewrite said chapter and have
the character live in the end. Then I proudly presented my finished work to my father.
You can imagine how poorly written it was. We are talking about a 7 or 8-year-old kid
here. But despite it all, my father encouraged me to keep going and it’s thanks to him
that I soon turned to writing my own original fiction. Heh, shame I don’t have that story anymore. It would be great to see how far I’ve come since I wrote it. And cringe at how bad my writing was back then.
Do you have a favorite story or poem you’ve written? What’s it about?
Up until now, out of all I’ve written, I would say the story of my current novel is my
favorite. It’s in the medieval fantasy genre with an original setting, and very much
centered on the characters.
How many projects do you have planned over the next few years? Tell us about one.
Getting my novel published is one. I plan on finishing it and starting the editing process
this year, and next year have it ready to be sent for consideration. I also have a few
more short stories I plan on writing.
What is your writing process like?
When it comes to short stories, the most enjoyable part for me is the editing phase. I
want first to have the skeleton of the story, meaning a beginning and an end, and during
the editing I start adding the missing parts. The meat, the muscle, the nerves, the
organs, and finally the soul.
As for novels, I enjoy both. It’s hard for me to say at this time if I prefer one over the
other.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Oh, this is pretty chaotic. Music is one, which is a bit ironic because I can’t write if it’s
playing in the background. But if I am doing anything else it can inspire me to come up
with a new story idea. Usually, sad or dark songs have the most success, even if I am
neither a depressed nor dark person. Happy tunes are lovely, but they don’t do much for
me. Probably because despite my sense of humor, I am not drawn to writing comedy.
Another example would be books. Sometimes when reading, a certain image or mention
might inspire me to write something. For example, if I read a book where a temple of
some god is mentioned, I might come up with a romantic tale that takes place in some
dark, forgotten crypt. Or something like that. Maybe whilst reading a book about
honorable knights I come up with the idea of a sci-fi piece that has no connection
whatsoever with what I am reading.
Like I said, it’s pretty chaotic. But that’s how inspiration usually is, right? You’d have
better luck reading the Necronomicon without losing your sanity than understanding the
logic (if there is one) of how inspiration works.
Who is your favorite author / what is your favorite book?
This is a tough one. I’ve read works from some amazing authors like Isaac Asimov,
Frank Herbert, George R.R. Martin, Madeline Miller, Stephen King, Brandon Sanderson
and so on. But if I were to pick my favorite it would have to be H.P. Lovecraft. I will not
comment on what type of a person he was, but his style of horror is fascinating.
As for my favorite book, it’s got to be The Infinite and The Divine by Robert Rath. That
book made me laugh so many times and its main characters, Trazyn and Orikan, are so
petty and quirky you can’t help but love them.
What is one goal you have for your writing future?
Have more short stories published and getting my novel finished and published as well.
What do you hope readers enjoy most from your work?
I hope my writing helps people forget, even for a while, about the struggles, worries, and
disappointments of daily life. The world we live in is downright insane. I hope my writing
can help people forget about it for a time. I hope it can take them on a journey they will
remember fondly. And maybe even touch their souls.
